Using AMP with Squarespace

Create lightweight versions of your blog posts to help them load faster on mobile devices.

Last updated March 7, 2023

AMP, or, Accelerated Mobile Pages, creates lightweight versions of web pages to help them load faster on a mobile device. AMP versions of pages appear in Google search results with featured images and headlines. Visitors can tap a result to view a stripped-down AMP version of the page that prioritizes mobile readability with a simplified design.

Tip

Visit AMP's website to see example blog posts and learn more. The site includes instructions for enabling AMP, but you can skip these. All Squarespace sites are ready to enable AMP automatically.

Before you begin

  • Only blog posts can display AMP formatting. AMP isn’t available for other pages.
  • AMP is only visible in Google mobile search results. Other mobile search engines will link to the standard mobile version of your blog posts.
  • You can view AMP versions of blog posts on mobile devices by clicking through Google search results or by manually entering the AMP version of a blog post URL in a browser. Enabling AMP doesn't change your blog posts' appearance when accessed any other way.
  • Squarespace Analytics doesn't record traffic on AMP-enabled blog pages.

How will AMP change my posts?

AMP formatting strips down a page’s HTML to its essentials. On Squarespace, this means that some blocks won’t appear on AMP posts. The AMP design is standard for all blog posts and unrelated to your site's style.

You’ll notice a few major changes:

  • Page margins readjust.
  • All text displays in Muli font.
  • Supported blocks stack into a single column. This is standard for all Squarespace sites on mobile, even if AMP isn’t enabled.
  • CSS and other custom code won't display.
  • A Discover more link appears at the bottom of the post linking to your full site.

The following blocks appear in AMP posts:

  • Audio blocks
  • Embed blocks
  • Gallery blocks - All gallery block types display as a slideshow.
  • Image blocks
  • Line blocks
  • Markdown blocks
  • Quote blocks
  • Text blocks
  • Video blocks

All other blocks are hidden from AMP posts. Instead, your visitors will see a link directing them to the full post to view all content.

Image blocks in AMP posts

If your blog post includes image blocks in the Inline layout, ensure any captions are entered as plain text and don't include extra formatting. Captions with extra formatting may prevent the post from converting into an AMP post.

Image blocks with any other layout use titles and subtitles instead of captions. These text fields won't display in AMP posts; visitors will need to visit the full version of your site to see image titles and subtitles.

Enable AMP formatting

To enable AMP:

  1. Open the Blog preferences panel.
  2. Scroll down to Accelerated Mobile Pages.
  3. Check Use AMP.

Google can now index your optimized blog posts. You can speed up this process by requesting a reindex through Google Search Console.

Preview your AMP posts

The AMP version of your URL automatically generates in mobile Google results after you've enabled AMP. You don't need to change any post URLs manually.

To preview an AMP post, add “?format=amp” to the end of the post URL. This generates the AMP-formatted version of your blog post, either on a computer or on a mobile device.

For example, if this is your standard blog post URL:

http://myblog.com/blog/2016/2/19/mypost

Use this URL to view the AMP version:

http://myblog.com/blog/2016/2/19/mypost?format=amp

You can also use this URL to share AMP posts with visitors, but we don't recommend this, as your site already includes responsive mobile styles.

Tip

You can customize your standard blog post URL formatting in the Blog preferences panel.

FAQ

Can I change the design of my AMP posts?

No. All AMP posts are automatically formatted for the best visual experience on mobile and have a standard style, independent of your site's design.

You can change the order of your blocks by opening the blog post editor and rearranging the blocks.

I can’t find my AMP blog posts in Google search results.

There are a number of reasons why your posts might not appear as results for a particular search term, even when AMP isn’t enabled. First ensure that you’ve enabled AMP in the Blog preferences panel, then review the common scenarios that might be preventing your site from appearing.

I tested my post's structured data and I’m seeing a logo error.

If you ran your URL through Google’s Structured Data Testing Tool, you’ll see a logo error if your site doesn’t have a logo. The post will still format for AMP without a site logo, but adding a logo may help the post rank higher in Google search results.
