Adding content to a Cover Page

Add branding and text

Use the tools in the Branding & Text panel to add:

  • A logo or branding text
  • A page headline
  • Body text

These settings work with your layout's style to help you present a minimal amount of information with maximum impact.

Note: Branding and text options vary by layout.
  1. In the Cover Page Menu, click Branding & Text.
  2. Under Branding, select Text to display title text, like your name or business name, or select Logo to upload a logo image. It's not possible to display a logo and title text at the same time.
  3. If you select Text, this serves as the page’s main title. If you select Logo, drag and drop an image file into the uploader that appears. Ensure that your logo follows our best practices, or create a new logo with Squarespace Logo.
  4. Enter a headline in the Headline box. Each layout presents the headline differently.
  5. Enter and format longer text for your Cover Page in the Body box. Each layout positions this text differently.

Add media

Use the Media tab to upload a background image, a looping video, or set a background color. There are a few things to note before adding media to your Cover Page:

  • Most layouts feature full-bleed background or profile images.
  • You can upload multiple images to create a slideshow or grid background.
  • Uploading a large number of high-resolution images can affect your Cover Page's load time.
  • It isn’t possible to add navigation controls or control the transition speed in a Cover Page slideshow.
  • Ensure that you’ve properly formatted your images before uploading.
  • Due to responsive design, images and videos will always crop to some degree, especially on mobile. The amount of cropping depends on the height of the image, the width of the browser, and the layout you've chosen.

From the Cover Page Menu, click Media.

Add images

Add a background video

Most layouts support background videos. Choose Video, then add a YouTube or Vimeo URL to create a looping visual element behind your content.

Use a background color

To display a plain background color instead of an image, choose None. The image will disappear from the preview. Change the background color in the Style panel.

Add actions

Add buttons, links, forms, or a newsletter signup to your Cover Page to help visitors take action, view other content, or submit their own information. If you don't want any actions on your Cover Page, leave the applicable boxes blank.

Note: You can add up to two buttons or five navigation links to a Cover Page, but not buttons and navigation links together. This restriction helps narrow the focus and guide visitors to the correct action. You can also add one form, whether you're using buttons or navigation links.

Add buttons

Buttons are calls to action that link to a different site, a file, or anything else you want visitors to discover. You can add up to two buttons to a Cover Page.

  1. Click Action in the Cover Page panel.
  2. Under Select Action Type, choose Buttons.
  3. Add a button label in the first field. Add a button link in the URL field.
  4. Choose the type of content you'd like to link to, then check or uncheck Open in New Window, depending how you’d like visitors to view your link:
    • Click the Files tab to link a downloadable file.
    • Click the External tab to link to an external site.
    • Click the Content tab to link to pages or collection items on your site.
  5. Click Save at the top of the panel to publish all changes.

Add navigation links

Navigation links direct visitors to a different page of your Squarespace site or to another website. If you’re using your Cover Page as a landing page, a navigation link can direct visitors to the rest of your site’s content. You can add up to five navigation links to a Cover Page.

  1. Click Action in the Cover Page panel.
  2. Under Select Action Type, choose Navigation.
  3. For each navigation link, enter the text for the link in the Link Label box. Click the URL box to edit the URL for the link.
  4. Click the Files tab to link a downloadable file or click the External tab to add a URL. Check or uncheck Open in New Window, depending how you’d like visitors to view your link.
  5. Click Save at the top of the panel to publish all changes.
Note: If a link label is very long, it can limit the link's font size. We recommend keeping link label text short for better formatting and readability.

Add a form

Cover Pages are ideal for collecting email addresses, RSVPs, or other responses in a form. A visitor can click a button and complete the form that opens in an overlay.

  1. Click Action in the Cover Page panel.
  2. Scroll down to Form and enter a button label in the Button Label box. Visitors will click this button to open the form.
  3. Click Edit Form to build the form content.
  4. The form editor opens with placeholder fields to help you get started. As you add and edit fields, a preview populates to the right.
  5. In the Form Name box, add a name for your form.
  6. Delete any placeholder fields by clicking the trash can icons.
  9. As an optional step, click the Advanced tab to customize the submit button label and edit the message that appears to visitors after submitting the form. Use regular text or HTML.
  10. Click Save in the form editor, then click Save at the top of the panel to publish all changes.
Tip: After connecting your form to storage, we recommend visiting the live version of your page and submitting a test form to see how it works.

Add a form background color

On most layouts, you can use the Custom Overlay Color tweak in the Style panel to add color to your form background. To hide this overlay from the rest of your page, use the opacity slider to make it transparent. Your visitors will see the overlay after clicking the form button.

This feature is only available on some layouts. On the following layouts, the form background matches the Color Behind Text setting:

  • Backstory
  • Card
  • Flagship
  • Flash
  • Focus
  • Monocle
  • Session
  • Spotlight
  • Vignette
Note: The Harbor layout doesn't include a Custom Overlay Color or Color Behind Text setting. Harbor form backgrounds will always be light gray.

Here’s an example of a form with an overlay enabled:

Hide the form (optional)

To hide the form, remove all Button Label text and leave the field blank. Your form data stays intact if you re-enable it later.

Add a newsletter signup

Use your Cover Page to let visitors know about your newsletter and encourage them to subscribe. Store submissions in your Email Campaigns, a new Mailchimp audience, or in Google Drive.

  1. Click Action in the Cover Page panel.
  2. Scroll down to Select Submission Type and enter a button label in the Button Label box. Visitors will click this button to open the form.
  3. Click Edit Newsletter Signup to add storage and customize.
  5. In the Advanced tab, customize the submit button label and add a disclaimer. You can also customize the message that appears to visitors after submitting the form in regular text or HTML.
  6. Click Save in the newsletter editor, then click Save at the top of the panel to publish all changes.

Add social icons

All Cover Pages can display icons that link to social profiles connected to your site. Icon placement varies by layout, but they usually display near the bottom.
