Hiding your built-in domain from search engine results

Every Squarespace site has a built-in URL, like example.squarespace.com. This is an important part of how Squarespace works and can't be removed. It’s common to hide this built-in domain from visitors by:

  1. Registering a custom domain with Squarespace or linking a domain you purchased elsewhere.
  2. Setting a custom domain as your primary domain.

After setting a custom domain as your primary domain, it updates in your site map. This lets search engines know this is the correct domain to display.

If your built-in domain still displays after adding a custom domain

If your built-in domain appears in search results, even after adding a custom domain, it's likely that your site was indexed before you made the change. You can resolve this by using Bing Webmaster Tools or Google Search Console to request a re-index.

If you don’t have a custom domain yet

If you don't have a custom domain yet and are just using your .squarespace.com URL, you can prevent your built-in domain from being indexed by setting a site-wide password until you're ready to use a custom domain.
