Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)

Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), a new requirement as part of PSD2 in Europe, came into effect on 14 September, 2019.

You don’t need to take any steps to comply with this new regulation. We've added technology to the checkout experience to support additional authentication with European banks. The Squarespace platform and your store are ready.

Why SCA?

SCA helps make online payments more secure. It’s a new way to verify your customers’ identity, and may help protect you from liability for fraudulent payments.

How does it work?

Customers with credit or debit cards issued in the European Economic Area (EEA) will see an extra authentication step during checkout. This may be a pop-up in their browser, a push notification from their banking app, or a similar notification. The exact authentication process depends on the customer’s bank.

Do I need to take steps to comply?

No. All Squarespace sites will support SCA by September 14, 2019.
