York troubleshooting

York, Artesia, Flores, Harris, Jasper, Jones, Lange, Shibori, and Taylor share the same underlying structure and functionality. This guide applies to all these templates.

This guide covers how to troubleshoot some of the most common issues that may come up when using the York, Artesia, Flores, Harris, Jasper, Jones, Lange, Shibori, and Taylor templates.

Text is breaking through the banner

These templates have responsive design and special scaling fonts to help you control font size on mobile. If your site isn’t displaying correctly on mobile, enable scaling fonts and experiment with reducing the font minimums. To learn how, visit Structure and style.

Note that long words won’t wrap when they reach the edge of a container. For best results, use shorter words in your titles and headings whenever possible.

I switched templates and my Project Page disappeared

If you switch to any template other than York, Artesia, Flores, Harris, Jasper, Jones, Lange, Shibori, or Taylor, Project Pages will convert to Gallery Pages.

After switching back to York, Artesia, Flores, Harris, Jasper, Jones, Lange, Shibori, or Taylor, you can recreate your original format by moving the images from a Gallery Page to a new Project Page:

  1. From the Home Menu, click Pages.
  2. Use the + symbol to create a Project Page.
  3. From the main Pages panel, click the Gallery Page that contains the images you want to move.
  4. Click the items you want to move.
  5. Click Move in the action bar that appears below.
  6. In the Select Destination Collection window, select the Projects Page and click Move Items.

Follow the same process to move images from a Project Page to a Gallery Page.

Random text appears when I share my site on social media

Squarespace can’t control exactly what appears on social media when you share content. However, sometimes text from the page header or footer displays, even if it’s hidden on your site. Therefore, it’s considered a best practice to delete the content from the headers and footers when they’re hidden.

How to delete the header or footer content:

  1. Open the Pages panel, and open the page with hidden header or footer content.
  2. Unhide the Page Header or Page Footer in the Page section of Site Styles.
  3. Click Save and exit out of Site Styles. Hover over the header or footer and click Edit.
  4. Delete the content.
  5. Return to Site Styles and uncheck Show Page Header or Show Page Footer.

How do I add content to my page header?

Hover over the top or bottom of any collection page or Index and click Edit in the Collection Header Content annotation to add content with blocks.

If you’re not seeing the Collection Header Content annotation:

  1. Open Site Styles.
  2. Scroll down to the Page section.
  3. Check Show Page Header.
  4. Click Save and exit Site Styles.
  5. Refresh the page.

The annotation should now appear on the page.

Tip: Add the page banner image, title, and description in Page Settings.

Videos aren't displaying on my Project Page

Every video on a Project Page must have a thumbnail image. Videos without thumbnail images display in the Pages panel with a diagonal line. To add a thumbnail image:

  1. From the Home Menu, click Pages.
  2. Click the Project Page.
  3. Hover over the video and click the .
  4. Click Add video thumbnail to add a thumbnail image manually, or click Restore video provider's thumbnail to choose an automatic thumbnail from your video's hosting provider.
  5. Click Save.

To learn more, visit Adding videos and images to a Gallery Page. Project Pages have the same interface as Gallery Pages.

The words "Page Description" display on my page

This placeholder text appears on Layout, Project, and Products Pages while you're logged into your site. Visitors to your site won't see this text.

To replace this text:

  1. From the Home Menu, click Pages.
  2. Hover over your page in the Pages panel and click the .
  3. Add text to the Description field.

Unlike the placeholder text, this new text will appear on your live site. If it doesn't, open Site Styles, scroll down to the Page section, and check Show Page Description.

My banner text's background highlight color has gaps

This can happen when your title or description is very short, and you've set a large custom highlight indent.

To fix this:

  1. From the Home Menu, click Design.
  2. Click Site Styles
  3. Scroll down to the Banner Text section.
  4. Reduce the Custom Highlight Indent tweak.

Alternately, you can use the Text Highlight Indent tweak in this same section to choose either the Small, Medium, or Large preset options, or add more text to your title or description.

My active navigation link color isn't working

This is a known issue in the York family when a page in the navigation is opened from a link on your site. The solution is to add a / at the end of the link's URL.

As an example, let's say you have a Button Block that links to a Blog Page. When you click the button to go to the Blog Page, the Blog Page's title in your navigation won't turn the color you set with the Primary Active Link or Secondary Active Link tweaks. (The color may show while you're logged in, but won't work on your live site.)

To fix this:

  1. Open your site in an incognito window and go to the page you want to link to. In this example, you'd go to the Blog Page.
  2. Copy the URL from the incognito window's browser bar.
  3. In a new window, log into your site and open the link editor. In this example, you'd go to the page with the button, open the Button Block's settings, then click the Clickthrough URL field.
  4. Click the External tab.
  5. Paste the URL you copied in Step 2.
  6. Add a / at the end of the URL.
  7. Save your changes.
