Adding blocks

When editing a page or post, you'll use blocks to create a custom layout of text, images, videos, audio, social content, and more. In this guide, you’ll learn how to add a block using the Add Block button or Insert Points.

This is a supplement to What are blocks, which we suggest you read first if you're new to Squarespace. That guide explains each block's design with links to the blocks' specific guides.

Where to use blocks

Available blocks

Visit What are blocks? to learn about the types of blocks you can add to your site.

Add blocks to a page

  1. In the Home Menu, click Pages. (If you don't see the Pages panel, collapse the site preview by clicking the arrow in the top-left corner of your site.)

  1. In the Pages panel, select the page you want to edit or add a new page.
  2. Hover over the area on the page where you’d like to add a block, and click Edit.
Tip: If you just added a new Regular Page, you'll see a "This page is blank." message. This message only appears to you until you add blocks to the page. To visitors, the page will be blank without any text.

  1. In the page editor that opens, you’ll see an empty Text Block with the filler text “Write here…”. Click within that text to replace it with your own content.
  2. To add a new block, use the Add Block button, + button, or an Insert Point.
  3. Select the block to add from the block menu. (You can also search within the menu.)
  4. The new block will appear on the page. Depending on the block, an editor will open where you can customize the block with your own content.

See the sections below for help.

Add Block or + button

  1. In the top-right corner of the page editor, click Add Block or + to open the Block Menu.
  2. Select a block.
  3. The new block will appear on the page. Depending on the block, an editor will open where you can customize the block with your own content.
  4. You can move the block later.
Tip: The Add Block button displays when you edit your first page. After that, the button shortens to +.

Insert Points

Insert Points are marks in page or post editors that show where you can add blocks. This method is helpful if you’d like to choose the block’s placement before adding it.

On a new Regular Page:

  1. Hover over the Text Block.
  2. You’ll see two Insert Points to the left of the block.
  3. As you hover over an Insert Point, you'll see guidelines indicating where a new block can be placed. You can move the block later.
  4. Click an Insert Point to open the Block Menu and select a new block.

If the page already has blocks:

  1. Hover to the left or right of any blocks.
  2. Click an Insert Point to add a new block.

Position a block

If you know where you’d like a block to appear on the page, you can place it directly from the block menu, rather than moving it later.

  1. Click the Add Block button, + button, or an Insert Point.
  2. From the block menu, click and hold the block you’re adding and drag it onto the page. Guidelines and grey boxes will appear to show where you can place the block.
  3. Release the block to place it.

Add blocks to other site areas

You can create custom layouts in other areas of your site that support blocks. Use the following guides to learn more about adding blocks to each area:

Why can’t I find the Add Block buttons or Insert Points?

First, ensure that you’re editing a page or area where you can add blocks. See the list above

Next, ensure that an editor is open. If an editor isn't open, you won’t see Insert Points. To open an editor, hover over where you want to add the block, and then click Edit

If you’re still having trouble, it may help to clear your browser’s cache, disable any browser extensions, or update your browser version.

Can I add blocks to my banner or header?

In general, it's not possible to add blocks to this part of your site. To change your site title, tag line, or site description, use the options in the Settings panel. To change your navigation links, adjust them in your Pages panel.

There are a few exceptions:

Headers

Banners

  • In Brine, Clay, Feed, Foster, Greenwich, Hatch, Heights, Hunter, Hyde, Jaunt, Juke, Keene, Lincoln, Marta, Mercer, Mojave, Motto, Nueva, Rally, Rover, Sonora, and Thorne, the intro area displays over banner images.
