Upload engaging visuals for your site or choose from stock images to match your brand.

Use images to highlight your products or portfolio, break up text, or showcase your brand’s personality. After adding images, you can resize them to make your images bigger or smaller on the page.

Video on adding and resizing images

This video shows how to add and resize images in Fluid Engine sections.

Where to add images on your site

Where you add images to your site depends on your site's version.

Other blocks that display images on your site

You can’t add images directly to some blocks. Instead, these blocks display images from elsewhere:

• Instagram blocks - Display images from a connected Instagram account
• Product blocks - Display product images from your store page
• Summary blocks - Display featured images from collection pages

How to add images

Add images to your site by uploading from your device, adding stock images, or reusing images from your Asset library.

Upload images from your device

Add an image to your site directly from your device. You can upload images to specific elements on your site, like image blocks or gallery sections, or upload to your Asset library to use later throughout your site.

When uploading images:

• Follow our formatting guidelines
• If the uploaded image doesn’t display the way you want, follow our image formatting troubleshooting steps
• If you can’t upload an image, follow our browser troubleshooting steps and try again

Add stock images

Add stock images through our partnerships with Unsplash and Getty Images. You can also reuse any stock image in other areas of your site.

Reuse images you've previously added

Reuse any image you've already uploaded to your site or any stock image you've licensed. View and manage all uploaded and licensed images in the Asset library.

Resize images

Squarespace sites use responsive design to automatically change the size of images depending on the visitor's device. To make images bigger or smaller on the page, or change how they crop, you can resize them in the editor.

Resize images added to blocks

How you resize blocks with images depends on the editor:

• Fluid Engine - Resize blocks directly on the page by clicking and dragging.
• Classic editor - Reduce the width of any block by adding other blocks next to it.

Some blocks have specific resizing options:

• Image blocks - In the classic editor, use the cropping handle to change the height of inline and poster image blocks.
• Gallery blocks - Depending on the layout, you can crop or resize images.
• Summary blocks - Use design settings to change how your images appear.
• Instagram blocks - Use settings to choose a design and change the aspect ratio.

Resize images added to pages and sections

Use the styling options for each page or section type to adjust how the images appear on your site:

• Auto layouts
• Gallery sections
• Portfolio pages
• Store pages

Resize images in other areas of your site

Images in some areas of your site have more specific resizing options:

• Section backgrounds - Change the height or width of the page section. These images always experience some cropping.
• Site logo - Change the position and size.

Tip: To make changes to your original image file dimensions, we recommend using third party image-editing software. For example, if you uploaded an image that’s 600px x 600px, but you want it to be 400px x 400px, you’d edit the image on your device, then upload it again to your site.

Customize your images with advanced design tools

Go beyond the basics with interactive images, animations, and image shapes:

• Add variety and unique visual effects to your images with image shapes
• Give your image blocks striking visual flair with animations and image effects
• Help images appear in search and make your site more accessible by adding alt text
• Make images stand out from the rest of your content by setting them to open in a lightbox when clicked
• Rotate your images, crop them, add filters to them, and more with the built-in image editor
• Turn images into links with clickthrough URLs
• Display more information when visitors move their cursor over an image with hover effects

Tip: To make changes to your original image file dimensions, we recommend using third party image-editing software. For example, if you uploaded an image that’s 600px x 600px, but you want it to be 400px x 400px, you’d edit the image on your device, then upload it again to your site.

Resize images for social media

You can resize and crop images to specific dimensions for use outside Squarespace or on social media platforms with Squarespace's free image resizer.

To use the image resizer:

1. Click Upload Images. You can select multiple .jpg or .png files.
2. Select the preset sizes you want for use on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), and Snapchat, and from other standard aspect ratios.
3. Click Confirm Selection.
4. Click the download icon in the top-right corner to download the images in a .zip file. The new images retain the original version’s file format.
