Checking your domain mapping records

If we detect that any DNS records weren’t set up properly during the domain connection process, the DNS record checker in the Domains panel will show you the exact CNAME and/or A Records to fix to get your domain working. 

If you’re seeing errors or if your domain isn’t working after 72 hours, a typo or missing record is most likely the culprit. The best way to troubleshoot these issues is to log into your domain provider and resolve each incorrect record, one at a time.

Step 1 - Go to DNS Settings

In the Home Menu, click Settings, and then click Domains.

You can also press the ? key while any panel is open and search domains.

If we detect a domain isn't connected correctly, it will display a red flag. Click the incorrectly connected domain you want to check.

Step 2 - Identify incorrect records

The DNS Settings panel marks any incorrect records with a red Record not found message in the Current Data column.

Step 3 - Log into your provider

Log into your domain provider and find where you manage your DNS settings. Depending on your provider, this may be called Zone File Settings, DNS Manager, or something similar.

Correct the error indicated for each record. To see instructions specific to your provider, click step-by-step guide. You can also review the full list of provider-specific guides.

Step 4 - Resolve incorrect records

Domain connection issues commonly occur from typos and copy-pasting issues. Check each record character by character to ensure they're correct. 

  • Miscopied CNAME – The unique CNAME code, which is usually the first record you add to your provider’s settings, is a string of letters and numbers. We recommend copying and pasting the code from this panel into your provider's settings to keep it accurate. If the unique code entered on your provider's end doesn't match, your domain won't connect.
  • Wrong A records — To successfully connect your domain with most providers, you'll need to create four A Records pointing to four IP addresses. If these are set incorrectly, the DNS checker will display an error next to the required values. Ensure that you only have these four A records and that you've removed any extras.
  • Other typos —Typos are a primary source of domain connection issues. Small errors, like ext-csut.squarespace.com instead of ext-cust.squarespace.com with your second CNAME, will prevent your domain from connecting correctly.

Step 5 - Refresh

After updating all incorrect settings, click Refresh in your Squarespace DNS Settings. While waiting for your settings to refresh, keep the following in mind:

  • Records can take between 24 and 72 hours to update. If the record appears correctly in your provider's DNS panel but you still see an error, wait 72 hours then click Refresh again.
  • Clicking Refresh repeatedly causes the DNS checker to try different servers, some which might have updated with the new records and others that haven't. If you see inconsistent results, wait 72 hours before refreshing again.

Step 6 - Check your domain

Return to the Domains panel. If your DNS Settings display Correct for all values in the Current Data column, your domain will show a yellow flag and read Connection in progress

Once the changes have fully propagated and your domain is correctly connected, it will show a green flag and read Connected.

You can also enter your domain name in a new browser window. If your site loads, your domain is correctly mapped. 

Note: Due to the way DNS records propagate, for a temporary period, your domain might work for you but not other visitors, or vice versa. If the records appear correct and the domain is working for some visitors, wait 24 to 72 hours and the domain should work for everyone.
