This guide offers best practices for Canadian merchants using Squarespace Commerce.
Switch to Canadian dollars (CAD)
After connecting Commerce to a payment processor linked to a Canadian bank account, the Store Currency in Payments settings automatically changes from US Dollars (USD) to Canadian Dollars (CAD).
If you sell to an international audience, you can select a different currency from the drop-down menu.
Change to metric measurements
You can change how your store displays weight (kilograms) and dimensions (meters) in Language and Region Settings.
- In the Home Menu, click Settings, and then click Language & Region.
- Scroll down to Measurement Standard, and select Metric from the drop-down menu.

Disable newsletter opt-ins
If you're based in Canada and you have a newsletter subscribe option at checkout, you can choose to not automatically enable customers into your email communications to comply with Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation.
- In Checkout settings, scroll down to Newsletter.
- Uncheck Enable mailing list opt-in by default.

Add Canada Post tracking numbers
When marking an order complete, you can include a tracking number with the shipping notification email. Select Canada Post from the drop-down menu.
Create Canadian tax rules
You can create different tax rules for each province in Taxes.
Create a Country Tax Rate
You can add a tax rate that applies to the entire country. For example, 5%. This displays as GST in receipts.
- In the Home Menu, click Commerce, and then click Taxes.
- Click Add Country.
- Select Canada from the drop-down menu. You can also press C to jump to countries starting with C.
Here, you can set the sales tax rate for all of Canada.
Add province tax rules
After selecting Canada using the steps above, you can add tax rules for each province. Province taxes are charged in addition to the Canadian country-wide tax. This displays in a separate line in receipts.

Hover over Canada and click add state.
Select a province from the Province drop-down menu.
Complete all fields. Here are some suggestions:
|Tax Name||Typically the type of tax for the province (PST, QST, MST, etc.)|
|Provincial Tax Rate||Typically the standard tax rate for the province.|
|Show as Combined Rate||If checked, the Tax Name will always be HST and the order receipt will read “HST (#%)”|
