Choose compelling thumbnails to showcase blog posts, products, and videos

Featured images represent individual collection items, like blog posts and products, and enhance the visual experience of your site. For example, if you use a summary block to display posts from your blog page, each post includes its featured image to give visitors a preview of the content.

Add a featured image to a blog post, event, or project

Featured images represent individual blog posts, events, and projects on their collection pages and across your site. They may also display when the items are shared on social media.

How you add a featured image depends on which version of Squarespace your site is on.

Add featured images to products on a store page

By default, the first image that displays in the product editor becomes the featured image, which displays on your store page and other places where you showcase the product, like in product blocks or summary blocks.

To add a featured image to a product:

1. Open the Pages panel.
2. Click a store page. If your site is on version 7.1, click a category.
3. Double-click a product.
4. In the product editor, click Images.
5. Click + to upload an image, select an existing one from your image library, or generate a new image with Image Studio.
6. If the product already has an image, hover over your new image and click the pin icon to set it as the featured image.
7. Click ... beside the featured image to edit it.
8. Click Save.

2. Click a videos page, then click All Videos.
3. Hover over the video and click …, then click Edit video.

Add featured images to blog posts with the Squarespace app

On the Squarespace app, you can only add featured images to blog posts. To add other featured images, use a computer.

How you add a featured image with the Squarespace app depends on which version of Squarespace your site is on.

Add featured images to pages (version 7.0 only)

Version 7.1 doesn't use featured images for pages. To create a banner image, add a section background image. To set an image that displays when you share a page on social media, add an alternate social sharing image.

Page featured images appear on index pages and create per-page banner images in some templates.

To add a featured image to a page:

1. Open the Pages panel.
2. Hover over the page in the side panel and click to open page settings.
3. Click the Media tab.
4. Click Add an image, then upload an image, select an image from your image library, or add a stock image. If the item already has an image, click Replace, then add a new image.
5. Click Save.

How do I remove a gallery page's featured image?

In most templates, when the gallery page doesn't have a featured image, it automatically creates one from the first image in the gallery. You can delete it, but some templates re-add the first image as a featured image whenever you make changes.

To prevent this, manually add a featured image in the page's settings. If your template uses the featured image to create a banner but you don't want a visible image, upload a featured image of a solid color that matches your background.

How do featured images display?

Where and how featured images display depends on your site's version.

Why isn't my featured image displaying on social media?

When you share a link from your site on social media, the image that displays depends on the platform and what content you've added to your site. For example, your social sharing image may display instead of the featured image.

Can I edit my featured image after uploading it?

Yes. You can use the image editor to style or crop the featured image after uploading. You can also use focal points to change how the image is centered.
