If you purchased a domain from 101domain and want to keep it registered with them, you can connect it to your site by following this guide. In this process, you'll change a few settings in your 101domain account. After completing these steps, your domain will stay registered with 101domain, but it will connect to your Squarespace site. Before you begin, review our requirements for connecting a third-party domain.
Tip: We recommend transferring your domain to Squarespace instead of connecting it. Here are some reasons why you might want to transfer your domain:
- You can move all aspects of managing it to your Squarespace account so you won't need to pay for it through a third party.
- Your domain could qualify for one free year of service.
- Squarespace can help with any issues with your domain directly.
Step 1 - Open the Domains panel
Depending on your plan:
- In the Home Menu, click Settings, and then click Domains.
- In the Home Menu, click Domains.
You can also press the ? key while any panel is open and search domains.
Step 2 - Link your domain
Click Use a Domain I Own.
Click I want to connect a domain instead.
Enter the full domain name you’re linking in the Domain Name box, and then click Continue.
Note: If you see a message that says "This domain is already connected to another Squarespace site," check any other Squarespace sites you manage to determine where the domain is connected. Then disconnect it from that site. For help logging into the correct site, visit Managing multiple sites.
Select 101Domain from the drop-down menu.
Click Connect Domain. You'll see a message letting you know that the connection to your domain is in progress. Click Okay to continue.
A new panel will open with the records you need to enter in your 101domain account so your domain connects to Squarespace. Keep this panel open for your reference.
Step 3 - Log Into 101domain
Go to 101domain and log into your account.
From the Dashboard, click Active Domains, then click your domain name.
Scroll to the DNS Records section and click Manage Advanced Domain Records Settings (CNAME, A, MX).
You'll now copy the records from the Domain panel so your 101domain domain correctly links to your Squarespace site.
Note: Don't delete MX records during this process. MX Records connect your email address. Deleting them could interfere with your email service.
Step 4 - Add the first CNAME
In the first line of your Domains panel, copy the unique code that appears directly below the Host column. The unique code is a random string of numbers and letters that must point to verify.squarespace.com.
Under Add DNS Record, click Add CNAME Record.
- In the first Domain Name box, paste the unique code from the Host column in the Domains panel. The code is a random string of numbers and letters.
- Leave the TTL entry as 86400.
- In the second Domain Name box, enter "verify.squarespace.com"
- Click Done.
You'll see a message confirming the new record. Click View DNS Records to return to the previous page.
You should now have a CNAME with your unique Host code pointing to verify.squarespace.com.
Step 5 - Add the second CNAME
In the second line of your Domains panel, www appears directly below the Host column. This record must point to ext-cust.squarespace.com.
Return to your 101domain settings and click Add CNAME Record again.
- In the first Domain Name box, enter "www"
- Leave the TTL box as 86400.
- In the second Domain Name box, enter "ext-cust.squarespace.com"
- Click Done.
Note: You may already have a CNAME set up with a www Domain Name. If so, edit this existing CNAME so that the second Domain Name is ext-cust.squarespace.com. (Without the last ".")
You should now have a CNAME with www pointing to ext-cust.squarespace.com.
Step 6 - Add A Records
In the last four lines of your Domains panel, copy the IP addresses that appear in the Required Data column. Create four A Records in 101domain matching these values.
Under Add DNS Record, click Add A Record.
- Leave the first Domain Name box blank.
- Leave the TTL box as 86400.
- In the IP Address field, enter "126.96.36.199"
- Click Done.
Repeat this process three more times using the following values:
In your DNS records, you should now see four A Records pointing to the following IP addresses:
Note: You may already have some A Records in place. If so, edit any existing A Records with a blank Domain Name so that the IP Address field matches the values above. If you see other A Records in your account that don’t match what’s shown in this guide:
- Host: blank - Delete only if it doesn't match what’s shown in this guide.
- Host: Mail or Email - Don’t delete. This connects to your email address. Deleting it could interfere with your email service.
Step 7 - Refresh
After changing your records, return to the Squarespace Domains panel, and click Refresh below the records.
The Current Data column in the panel will start to update and show if your records are entered correctly. It can take up to 72 hours for this information to process.
To go the previous panel, click the arrow in the top-left corner.
Step 8 - Wait and test
If all records are entered correctly, your domain will connect to your site within 24 hours. At times, it can take up to 72 hours. Visit the Domains panel at any time to check your progress.
When the domain is correctly linked, it will appear in the Domains panel with a Connected label.
Troubleshoot with the DNS record checker
If we detect that your records weren’t set up properly, your domain will appear in the Domains panel with the message “Can’t verify domain ownership.”
To troubleshoot, use the DNS checker tool in the Domains panel to see the exact CNAME and A Records to fix with your domain provider.
Click the domain in the Domains panel, and then click DNS Settings. For detailed instructions, visit Checking your domain mapping records.
